The FBI is currently investigating JPMorgan Chase, among others, for a attack that allegedly originated with Russian hackers. According to authorities with information about the incident, several gigabytes of sensivite data were lost, and the breach is now being looked at as possible retaliation for government-sponsored sanctions.

Authorities are investigating recent attacks at major European banks for any connections. Similar vulnerabilities were exploited in these attacks.

The methods used in the attack display traits usually used by government sponsored hackers, but federal agencies investigating the matter have not confirmed any links yet.

JPMorgan spokeswoman Patricia Wexler said that “Companies of our size unfortunately experience cyberattacks nearly every day. We have multiple layers of defense to counteract any threats and constantly monitor fraud levels.” The company states that they have not detected any unusual fraud activity, but are cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.

The bank alerted customers to contact the bank if they noticed any suspicious activity on their accounts.
